August TUSAL

Well, time has zipped away again and another month has passed and it’s TUSAL time again.  Here’s this month’s jar:

I still can’t find one of my portable ORT-ports, so not all my ORTs are present and accounted for.  There are days that its a wonder that I can manage to both clothe and feed myself.

So last month I posted my ORT report and then headed off camping with the family.  My husband decided to make a fun family event for all the nieces and nephews – he planned an Olympics for all the kids to participate in.  I helped out with rounding up prizes for everyone.  We didn’t award any first, second or third place prizes as it would make things too competitive and we’re just trying to have fun (plus the fact that the youngest competitor is 6 and the oldest is 16, it just didn’t seem fair!).  So we had a Torch Making ceremony (we were going to set them on fire at the end in our own Olympic cauldron, but there was a fire ban on, so no fires for us!), and ping pong ball blowing contests and stilt walking competitions and obstacle courses and canoe sinking and raft building and water-fun shooting and……  It took us 2 full days to get through all the events my hubby planned.  We had lots of fun!  I’d share pictures, but I haven’t asked for permission from the parents of my nieces and nephews, so you’ll just have to trust me.

I did fit in some stitching while we were away.  I started (and finished) this little Mill Hill kit:

It’s really pretty and sparkly.  I still need to cut it out, back it with some felt and make a hanger.  That likely won’t happen until closer to Christmas.

I also finished something else!  (I know, a record!)

Witchy Washy by Raise the Roof Designs

Stitched on 32-count Belfast hand-dyed by PTP “DaVinci”

Using most of the recommended fibres (subbed DMC 310 for Black Crow, DMC 414 for  Barn Grey, DMC 612 for Cidermill Brown, DMC 3829 for Schneckley)

This was a thoroughly enjoyable stitch and I had this piece kitted up for ages!  Don’t know why I waited so long to stitch it.  The only thing that I still need to locate are a couple of buttons shaped like black crows to sit on the branches of the trees.  The recommended buttons are from JABC and are a little (lot) pricey for my tastes.  Hopefully I’ll find a good substitute that won’t cripple the wallet!

I had a sudden urge to do a little finishing too, although I still need to find some trimmings to completely polish these two things off:

On the left is ‘Cold & Cuddly’ (I think that’s the name, anyway) from Cherrywood Design Studio and on the right is Lizzie*Kate’s ‘Life’s a Stitch’.  Both of which I stitched in the last year or so.  They’re both finished as cubes, but both need some ribbon and bows to really finish them off.  Need to do some shopping!

I have managed to convince myself that I should do some knitting.  So far I’ve mangled one ball of wool (and the project is in time out until it behaves itself and until I can find one ball of replacement wool) and I’ve attempted a sock – twice.  Apparently I don’t read directions well.  Really, I’m just a menace with wool and should give up.  Oh well, at least it’s entertaining remembering swear words in foreign languages.

I’m off to torture some wool again.

TUSAL–and it’s almost on time!

Well I noticed around blog-land that it’s TUSAL time – I’m late, as usual, but at least only by a day or so, rather than an entire month!

 

 

 

Here’s my jar’s beauty shot for the month (taken at night in bad light – apologies for its absolute crap-tastic-ness!):

Its taken a decent jump in the last month.  It would have taken a larger jump if I hadn’t misplaced one of my portable ORT-ports that I carry around with me.  It seems to have grown legs and wandered off unattended.  I’ll find it eventually.

I’ve made great strides in my Fleur-de-Lys class from Laura J. Perin – I’ve finished just about everything – I just need to do a little backstitch around the leaves and petals of the centre iris and it’ll be finished.  I so enjoyed this piece and am sorry to see it end.

I also got my act together and managed to frame up a couple of pieces.  They’re far from perfect, but are good enough to hang on the walls.  First up is Moon Garden from Blackbird Designs:



I’m not sure just where I’ll hang this just yet, but I have a feeling it’ll end up in the guest room.

Then there’s Poppy, from Mirabilia/Nora Corbett:



I stitched this piece shortly after it was released as I fell in love on sight with it.  It’s going to hang in the newly-refurbished powder room.  It’s finally finished thanks to DH’s hard work:



The red in the left-hand picture is truer to the actual paint colour.  I’m quite happy with the finished product overall.  The room seems much bigger now that we removed the old vanity and went with a pedestal sink.  We just need to hang Poppy and a piece of artwork my friend, Teresa Wentzler, drew for me a few years ago.  I need to get the right frame for it and then it’ll hang in this little room too.

We’re off to the wild for the next week – camping with family.  DH has quite an event planned for his nieces and nephews (and our own sons too, of course).  But I’m not sharing details now – you’ll have to wait until we get home.  It should make for an entertaining trip!

Oh dear, where did it go?

Well, I’m sure I posted my May TUSAL.  I can’t find the pictures anywhere though – I think my new laptop got hungry and ate them.  So, here’s take 2 (over a month late, now):

Now that business is out of the way, I can offer some updates on what I’ve been up to.  Work was insanely busy the last couple of months – I did so many presentations!  I added everything up and at a guess I met over 3,700 students since this past October.  That’s a whole lot of young scientists!  I am so glad that the school year is over though – I can finally catch up with things like my garden and, most importantly, my stitching!

Since May I started a new piece and I seem to be flying through it:


This is ‘Witchy Washy’ by Raise the Roof Designs.  I’ve had this piece kitted up in my stash for years now and finally decided it was time to stitch it.  I’m stitching it on a piece of PTP DaVinci.  It’s really, really pretty.  I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

And then, because I’d had such a busy school year and because my in-laws (being the kind people that they are) gave me some money for my birthday in May, I decided I deserved a special treat.  It came in the mail this past Monday:


One of my favourite designers for canvaswork had sent me a box.  What was in the box, you ask?  Just this:

This is a special cyber-class being offered by Laura J. Perin.  I loved the piece on sight and when I found that I could buy a complete kit and I could get it in PURPLE…. Well, you see what happened.  The purples are all my favourite DMC purples – 550, 552, 333 and Caron Watercolours – Amethyst.  I finally sat down and started this last night – here’s what I got accomplished:

I have to admit that this part of the stitching has been a bit boring as it’s all been done in satin stich.  The interest level will pick up significantly now as I’m moving on to the outermost border (which does a ton of neat layering stitches) and then we’ll start working on a lot of the cool stuff that goes inside the four boxes.  For the first time I’m using some YLI Ribbon floss (it’s the purple bits and yellow bits) which I’m really enjoying.  It’s very, very pretty and easy to work with.

Well, I’m off to the post office to mail off the last of my expenses for this year and then I’ll probably curl up under a cat and stitch a bit.

Drunk Monkeys

Well, I see by the calendar on the wall that I’ve managed to miss the April TUSAL by the better part of 3 weeks.  Life interferes when we least expect it, it seems…  Here’s my extremely late post:

Not a huge jump this past month, mostly because I’ve either been working like mad or working on just one project.  Which project, you ask?  Just this one:

Cirque des Cercles by Ink Circles

I am so totally in love with this piece.  It is gorgeous!  I’m going to miss working on it though – it was just so nice and relaxing and easy.  I think I’ve got Cirque de Trianges all kitted up………….

Right at the time that I was supposed to be posting my TUSAL, I was away in Gananoque attending/working at Enchanting Escapes retreat.  We had such a lovely weekend and the weather was perfect for stitching – lots of rain! 

This year at retreat, we were lucky enough to have a shop displaying their wares for all the reatreaters to peruse and purchase.  Knowledge and Needles couldn’t attend the spring retreat in person, but they sent lots of goodies to fondle and they promised to attend the fall retreat!  Having no resistance in the face of such lovelies, I caved and added this to my stash:

There were tons of Carrie’s Creations threads and I helped myself to some lovelies.  I don’t really have a purpose in mind for any of these threads, I just picked them because they’re pretty!  Isn’t that the perfect reason to acquire them?

I was drooling over a few other patterns too, but couldn’t bring myself to buy them.  I guess I was drooling a little too loudly, because one of my friends overheard me and bought them for me as a birthday present (my birthday was just a week after retreat was over…)

So no doubt you’re wondering – why is this post titled ‘Drunk Monkeys’?  Well, let’s see.  It all started when hubby ripped apart out powder room.  This is what it looks like right now:


Notice the lack of toilet?  Sink?  Yeah – there’s nothing left right now.  Thankfully there are two other fully functional bathrooms in the house.  And I’m getting extra exercise as the bathrooms are up on the second floor of the house.  Yippee!

So after my husband pulled out the old (butt-ugly) vanity, he discovered that he needed to make additional repairs to the walls where the vanity stood:


Can you see how there’s a horizontal line running along the wall there?  It’s all patched and white now.  Why is it patched?  You can see that the vanity was higher than the horizontal line…..  Ah well, that leads us to the discussion of the drunk monkeys who clearly wired this house.  Instead of running a wire from the light switch, down the wall, across one wall, around the corner and up the adjacent wall in order to wire a light above the mirror (which, of course is what a *logical*, *sane*, not-drunk monkey would do), the drunk monkeys punched a hole below the light switch and ran the wire diagonally across the corner, punched another hole to feed the wire up to the light above the mirror.

It might not have been too bad, except for the fact that we’ll be putting in a pedestal sink.  Somehow having a wire run diagonally across the wall, in the open didn’t seem like a prudent idea to us.

Then we discovered that not only did drunk monkeys wire our house, but they also had a hand in the drywalling.  See this square on the wall here?


That’s where the toilet paper holder used to be.  I wanted it taken out of the wall because it’s shiny chrome and all the fixtures are going to more of a brushed nickel finish.  So hubby obligingly pulled it out.  Then we had the following conversation:

Him:  ‘I found all the extra drywall.’

Me:  ‘What extra drywall?’

Him:  ‘Come and look.’

So I went and I looked.  Behind that hole in the wall, there are at least 5 sheets of loose drywall just sitting behind the wall.  New form of insulation, perhaps?  We weren’t about to pull down the entire wall to remove the drywall, so we’ve got 5 sheets of loose drywall floating around back there. 

I could understand craziness in an old house (I’ve lived in my share of them growing up), but this house isn’t even 30 years old!  Clearly, drunk monkeys are on the loose.

I’ll leave you today with a picture of my kitty, Mojo.  Mojo has always had an obsession with wool.  She’s even picky enough that she will separate bamboo, acrylic or anything else from the wool and just love the real wool.  She won’t eat the wool, she just rolls around on it.  I caught her like this the other morning…..

Sorry the picture is a bit blue – it was early in the morning and I had to work quickly before she moved, so I didn’t have time to play with the camera settings…..  Mojo dug this bit of sock wool out from the bottom of a bag, rolled around on it for a good 10 minutes, then spent some time loving the wool.  Then she stood up and yelled at me until I took it away and put it back where she found it.  We’ve been repeating this process daily.  (and yes, my carpet is covered in crap – I’ve been cutting foam pipe insulation for work (don’t ask) and it’s messy stuff to cut – need to get the vacuum out!)

Late, late, late TUSAL

And it’s not because I forgot!  I actually took a picture on time, but it’s taken me until now to convince my laptop that it needs to talk to the camera and to convince the camera to let the laptop look at the pretty pictures stored inside.  It hasn’t been a pretty discussion.  But I managed to talk the warring parties into a peace treaty for long enough to grab the photo I needed:

 

I’ve added a fair bit of red to the jar as I’ve been plowing my way through Cdc.  There’s very little left to finish now – just two big motifs in the center and it’ll finally be done.  Since I’m enjoying it so much, I have a feeling I’ll drop everything else to finish it off.  No update picture of it today, though.  You’ll have to wait for it’s beauty shot when I finish it.

What Have I Been Up To?

Well, not much actually.... Last week was March Break here and we mostly hung out at home and didn't do a heck of a lot. Naturally that translates into extra stitching time for me. The weather has been unusually warm for this time of year - I've never run around in a T-shirt in March before, so we've been outside enjoying the gorgeous sunshine too!

I've been working on my Kimono, but my progress has definitely slowed as of late. I finished the braided fence pattern (including all the compensating stitches) that makes up the bulk of the kimono. Now I need to fill in the empty canvas spaces with a combination of Silk Mori and Kreinik Blending Filament. I'm attempting to lay the fibres - have you ever tried to lay BF? Painful does not even begin to describe the process. I love the sparkle it adds, but it may kill me to get it all done. Hence why progress has slowed on this piece. Once I get the Silk/BF done too, I'll be moving onto a relatively complex part of this piece which has me a little worried. Mostly, I think I just need to read and re-read the directions, then put on my big-girl panties and do it. I think my dread of the next part is making me procrastinate... And there's all the BF to deal with first.... Anyway, here's the Kimono today:

Treasure Them Now...Or Eat Them!

This piece stitched up super-fast and was lots of fun. I enjoyed watching all the little baby dragons emerge. All the backstitch on this piece just about drove me round the bend - I think I spent close to 10 hours doing all the backstitch - but it's soooo worth it.

And since I was avoiding the Kimono, CdC came out to play and I've made a great leap forward on it. Stitching with only one fibre sure does speed up the process. I had to go buy more floss today though - I'm on my last skein and there's still a good bit of stitching to do. Here's Cdc in all it's glory:

Sorry for the dark & wonky & wrinkly pictures - still no iron and I forgot to take pictures earlier today when the light was better.

I've also got a new creature taking up space here - a little hermit crab that my youngest has named Phil:

He's really quite friendly and enjoys exploring. I'll be using him in one of my science programs as a demonstration of an animal that carries his habitat around with him. I just hope he'll hold off on molting until June - when he's molting, he's not up for public appearances and we've got a busy April & May ahead!

TUSAL Time & Canvaswork Crazies

Well, the calendar on the wall indicates that today is the new moon, which naturally means that it’s time for this month’s TUSAL:

 

The jar certainly took a respectable jump this past month – mostly because I seem to have come down with a case of Canvaswork Crazies….  Ever since I finished Golden Reminiscence I’ve been on a tear through canvaswork projects of old.  I’ve even finished one of them:

 

 

Triangulations

This was a class piece from the CreativFestival at some point in the last few years.  I really love this piece and don’t know why I didn’t drag it out sooner to finish it.  It’s just pretty, pretty, pretty.

 

Then, since I had an urge for more canvaswork, out came this piece:

 

This piece is called Solitary Flight and again, it’s a piece by Anna Marie Winter that was taught at the CreativFestival at some point in the last few years.  I’m working my way through the background in a braided fence pattern in 5 strands of Silk Mori.  It’s highly soothing and repetitive.  I have a bad case of waste knot-itis and I really need to trim and bury ends…..  (Although if I leave them, I’ll soon be stitching over them and they’ll bury themselves – much less work for me!).  Once the background is done I’ll be stitching a gorgeous dragonfly over the background.  You can see the finished piece here (scroll down a bit – it’s partway down the page – and I really, really want the 5 fans kimono & the golden kimono now…. Reflections is in my stash already….)

 

I think I’ll head back to the stitching chair for a little more time with Solitary Flight’s background…..

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s day has swung round again – no doubt the florists and card companies are jumping for joy today.

 

I’ve been working a little bit this month – but not much at all in comparison to this past fall.  I’m enjoying the time off, which I’m spending with a needle in my hand.  Here’s what I’ve been working on (sorry for the wrinkles – I’m still without decent iron – hoping to remedy that situation in April at the spring CreativFestival….)

 

First up – LoTD:

 

 

I finished backstitching Majesty and worked on the border for Magic.  It’s slow going, but I’m still enjoying it.

 

Then I dug this old WIP out of the pile – and finished it in less than an hour…..

 

This is from a class I took at the CreativFestival back in 2009.  It needs to be finished into a needle roll and there’s a little pattern darning to do on the edges yet, but the stitching is complete.  It’s so pretty!  It’s from Dragon Dreams.

 

Heather passed on a kit that she started, but was unable to finish because the fibres are all wool – and she’s allergic to it.  We have extraordinarily similar tastes in things, so I was quite happy to be the recipient of this little kit.  I’m about half done:

 

It will finish into a needlebook when it’s done – but I’d better finish the stitching first!

 

And then, because my resistance was low (not that it’s ever particularly high when it comes to starting new projects…..), I started this:

 

This is ‘Love them or eat them’ which was a class taught at last fall’s CreativFestival.  Another Dragon Dreams piece.  I couldn’t take the class, but Jen was kind enough to let me buy an extra kit from her.  I really wanted to start this when I first got it, but kept resisting.  I finally gave up.  I’m enjoying the stitch – need to dig out more DMC 890 for the dragon’s tail – I managed to run out. 

 

Then, after spending so much time making little x’s, it started to get to me, so naturally, I picked up a mostly-finished canvaswork piece and polished it off:

 

Golden Reminiscence

using Caron Antica, Waterlilies, Impressions, Soie Cristale, Watercolours

 

The colours in this piece aren’t really ‘me’ at all, but I did enjoy the stitching.  The Antica (it was used for all the sashing on the outside of the design) just about killed me.  Antica rates right up there with DMC metallics for ornery-ness as a fibre.  It looks to be a knitted metallic, so if you catch it wrong, it unravels…..  I caught it wrong more than once.  I’m not counting the exact number of times, but let’s just say that the ORT jar got fuller this month because of it.

 

Being winter, I have my bird feeder up to keep the little feathered friends happy (and provide some entertainment for Mojo, the stone deaf cat)…..  Last year I had a female cardinal that took up residence on my windowsill and loved to watch TV.  Imagine my surprise when, a year later, she has shown up on my windowsill again:

 

(I had to turn on the TV to get her to stay long enough to catch a picture of her – if the TV isn’t on, she lands, looks in then takes off again.  If the TV is on, she’ll stay for at least 5 minutes before flying off again….)  I never would have thought that she would remember the window ledge and TV watching a year later….  We’re trying to decide upon a name for her, since it seems she (and her hubby – he doesn’t ledge-sit though) have adopted us.

First TUSAL of 2012, a finish, a gift & some progress

Well, that about sums it up…..

 

It’s the first new moon of 2012 and that means time for the first TUSAL post of the year.  I dumped out my ORTs from 2011 so my jar is pretty empty:

 

It has a good amount of ORTs in it – but not because of excessive stitching – more excessive frogging…..  Remember my New Year’s start?  It looked like this a couple of weeks ago:

 

And I thought I was doing quite well for only having worked on it for a few hours……  And then my good friend Froggy stopped by….  I discovered (much to my dismay) that I am completely and totally incapable of counting.  For some reason, this is news to me.  Despite repeated illustrations to the contrary, I persist in this odd belief that having a degree in Mathematics enables me to count.  It does not.  Just sayin’……

 

So I discovered that the entire border from the pink quaker-ish flower on the left, all the way around (counter-clockwise) to the top most pink quaker-ish flower at the top was off.  By one lousy thread.  Not one stitch, but one thread.  I discovered this issue shortly after I took the above picture.  Soooooo – all the border got frogged (I couldn’t fudge it no matter how I tried)….  And my ORT jar got fuller.

 

But this project grabbed me ‘round the middle and after all the frogging (and ordering of replacement fibres), I fixed my error and finished it off in no time at all!  Here it is, all pretty and finished:

I am totally in love with this piece.  It’s not my usual style at all, yet for reasons unknown, I fell in love and stitched it up in record time (frogging aside!)…..

 

I didn’t abandon all my other projects for Moon Garden – LoTD got some attention too – Majesty is all backstitched now:

 

And I’m moving on to Magic – but I’ll stitch the border first!  I worked a little on CdC as well, but didn’t make enough progress to take a picture.

 

(BTW, sorry for the wrinkly, dark pictures – my beloved Rowenta iron bit the dust in the last couple of weeks and I only have an iron that likes to spit crap all over fabric at random and I won’t put *that* near my stitching….  I’m on the hunt for a replacement iron….)

 

And just last Friday, I was lucky enough to spend the day in the company of Heather and we had a little adventure together.  We headed off to the Bata Shoe Museum and wandered around there (fascinating place – I never thought that much about shoes before but their evolution and cultural differentiations were really quite interesting) and then had a wonderful lunch at a Japanese place.  It was a lovely time spent with a friend.

 

Now Heather and I usually exchange Christmas gifts of some nature every year but it seemed like everything conspired against us so we couldn’t wrangle some time together before this past Friday.  It was probably just as well in the end though – I had ordering issues (I swear some of what I bought for Heather came via outer Mongolia or some other far flung destination rather than North America….)….. 

 

Heather spoiled me rotten, rotten, rotten this year.  Here’s what I found in my happy possession:

 

(it was so pretty and beautifully wrapped that I took this picture, then stared at the contents for about 20 minutes as I didn’t want to rip any of it open!  Heather sewed the bag – isn’t it wonderful?)……

 

Finally giving into temptation, I tore away all the wrappings to find these lovely goodies within:

the yummiest smelling soap I’ve ever come across (smells just like a shortbread cookie!)  Yum!

Isn’t that the most adorable little snowman?  My youngest DS tried to make off with it, but I rescued him.  And a skein of a gorgeous Thread Gather Silk….  Yummy!

 

Aren’t I the luckiest thing?  Thanks so much Heather!  I love every little thing!

 

Well, that about sums up my last couple of weeks.  Work is picking up steam again so time may be tight – I hope to spend some time with my needle though!

Happy New Year & Last TUSAL for 2011

Well, well, well, here it is 2012 and nary a post for the last month of 2011.  All I can say is that it got pretty busy over in my neck of the woods, and I got pretty lazy in the posting department.

 

I did know I needed to post my TUSAL update on Christmas Eve and I had good intentions.  However, DH conspired again to make things challenging.  Remember when I started posting TUSAL updates last January?  And I had to do a major retrieval of my ORTs after hubby threw them out?  Well, I didn’t have to do a garbage retrieval, but I did have to go on a seek-and-find mission to figure out what the heck he’d done with my ORT jar…..  My hubby kindly did a ton of holiday decorating this year – and tidied up the mantel where my ORT jar was living….and put it…..  Well, that took some figuring out.  I tried all the logical places, then went to the illogical and found it on a high shelf in a box in a closet that I almost never open since I don’t put things in that closet anyway….  It’s generally next to empty….. Yes, I could have asked him, but he’s been on conference calls all day, so it’s hard to interrupt and ask where my ORT jar is hiding!

 

Needless to say, ORT jar has been found, and picture finally taken.  The ORT jar isn’t sitting in its usual locale due to Christmas decorations, so it had to pose for its beauty shot elsewhere this month:

 

 

Not a bad amount of threads in there overall. Now I can dump it out and start again for 2012.  Some of the threads added this month are from sewing rather than stitching.  Sadly I had a major catastrophe on one thing I was sewing as a gift for a friend and now need to start over again.  And no, I’m giving no other details.  She reads this blog!

 

As to what else contributed to the jar this past month – mostly I’ve worked on this:

 

 

(yes it is both blurry and crooked – me and the camera aren’t getting along today)….  All that is left to do on this block is the backstitch on the dragon.  It looks so pretty and I’m looking forward to moving on to the next block.  It stitched up pretty quickly too.

 

And for the first time in many years, I decided to allow myself a New Year’s start.  I don’t typically do this as there are certainly enough projects around here that need attention, but I had a real urge to start something that I’ve wanted to stitch for ages and ages:

 

 

This is the start of Moon Garden by Blackbird Designs.  It’s not my usual style, but something about the dark linen and the soft colours of this piece got me hook, line and sinker.  I saw it on someone’s blog and fell in love.  Then I haunted e-bay to find the chart (it’s Loose feathers #8 and hard to find) and paid more for it than I probably should have.  It has languished in my stash fully kitted for at least a year and a half.  It’s stitching up really quickly and I’m really loving it so far.  I’m stitching it on a 28-count PTP fabric called Raisin.
